Chapter 8
The Cabin

Sam Poynter was furious when she came back from her trip. She was mad that she wasn’t there to rip shreds off Justin for hurting her daughter, angry at the fact that she couldn’t make it home any earlier when she found out what had happened. She was positively livid when she found out that Justin was pressing charges of assault against Danny.

Natalie was doing everything that she could to make sure that Justin got what he deserved. She was an eye witness to the account, as was Riley and she had her best friend and co-worker helping her on the matter. She wanted to see Justin get what was coming to him, not Danny who did nothing wrong.

Danny didn’t want to admit it, but he was kind of scared that it was happening to him. He only hit Justin the once, and Justin hit him three times before they were both restrained.

Jazzie had been excused from the rest of the school year on the promise that she made up for her exams during the holidays. Sam had said that was a good idea and had booked some time off at work to look after her baby girl.

Dougie was at his mum’s house every single day. Whether it was to make sure Jazzie was okay or to reassure himself that Justin wasn’t going to show up, Danny didn’t know.

He felt like their world was falling apart. Jazzie was too sweet a girl to have this happen to her. She didn’t deserve it. Nobody deserved it.

Danny found himself alone with Jazzie one afternoon while Sam was out getting some groceries and Dougie was getting something from their house. Danny made sure not to touch Jazzie, as she still flinched around all males touching her, all males except Dougie.

He didn’t want to make her any more uncomfortable than she was, but he thought it might help to hear, so he settled on telling her the time that Bailey almost raped him.

Her eyes widened dramatically at the tale and Danny felt as though they connected in a way they previously hadn’t. Both were victims in an almost rape scenario and both knew how the other felt.

By the time Danny had finished telling Jazzie what had happened, she was hugging him tightly and they were both sobbing. Danny convinced her to talk to a counsellor, to aid her in getting through it. She had agreed and hugged him tightly again, knowing they could talk to each other about this and they would both understand.

Dougie found them lying together on the couch when he came home a short while later. Jazzie had fallen asleep, which was a rarity for her recently, as she was plagued with dreams of Justin and her prom night.

Dougie smiled softly at Danny and kissed his head. Danny extracted himself from Jazzie’s embrace and followed Dougie into the kitchen, throwing looks over his shoulder to make sure Jazzie was alright.

“She’s not scared of you anymore.”

Danny nodded. “We talked,” he said. “I told her about Bailey and we had a cry together. She has agreed to see a counsellor.”

Dougie nodded. “You are amazing,” he whispered. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

Danny pulled Dougie into his arms. “I’m lucky to have you,” he replied. He met Dougie’s lips in a soft kiss that conveyed their love for each other.

They stood in the kitchen, just holding each other and kissing every now and then. Jazzie poked her head in a few minutes later, looking worried. Dougie immediately pulled her into a hug.

“I thought you had gone,” she whispered sounding lost.

“We’re right here,” Dougie assured her. He placed a kiss on her hair and Jazzie closed her eyes.

“When is it going to get better?” she asked.

“Sooner than you think,” Danny replied. “With the right support and your family behind you all the way, you’ll heal sooner than you think.”

Jazzie nodded and held out her hand for Danny to join their hug. He stepped closer and wrapped an arm around each sibling and held them tight.

“I want what you two have,” she whispered a while later. “I want love like you have.”

Dougie pulled back a little. “You will get that, Jazz, you will.”

Danny nodded. “The right guy is out there for you,” he added. “You’re young; you have plenty of time for him to find you.”

Jazzie nodded and gave a small smile. “I’m gonna go to bed.”

“Want me to come up with you?” Dougie asked.

Jazzie shook her head. “I’ll be fine,” she smiled. “Thanks.” She kissed Danny and Dougie on the cheek and headed up to her room.

“She’s going to be okay,” Danny said to his lover.

Dougie nodded and rested his head on Danny’s chest. “I know, I just worry about her.”

“It’s perfectly understandable,” Danny said running a hand through Dougie’s hair.

Danny’s phone rang, interrupting them. “Hello?” he asked.

“Danny, it’s Nat.”

“Nat, what’s up?” he asked.

“We have sufficient evidence to free you of any charges,” Natalie said happily.

“Really?” Danny smiled. “That’s great.”

“I know. Belinda and I made sure that nothing came of Justin’s charges. Even though Jazzie didn’t press charges, we are going to make sure he gets what he deserves.”

“Wait, Nat, leave it, Jazzie said she didn’t want anything to come of this, she just wants to be left alone,” Danny said.

“Don’t you want justice?” Natalie asked. “He almost raped your boyfriend’s sister!”

“Of course I do,” Danny replied. “But that isn’t our call to make.”

Natalie let out a sigh. “Okay, we’ll let it rest.”

“Thank you,” Danny said. They said their good byes and hung up.

Danny quickly relayed the conversation to a confused Dougie and the blond thanked him for sticking up for what his sister wanted.

Things slowly got better for the Poynter family. Jazzie started seeing a counsellor and found that it actually helped her a lot. Justin wasn’t seen by them again, and Danny heard that the teen had moved out of their town, to which they were all thankful for.

Dougie’s art got a little darker after Jazzie’s almost rape and Danny could tell that it affected his lover more than he cared to say. But he knew that it was Dougie’s way of dealing with the stress of it all.

They were slowly getting normalcy in their lives and when Matt suggested they take a weekend off, they couldn’t help but agree.

Matt had hired a cabin for the six of them to share and they headed off for a relaxing weekend.

“I claim this room!” Matt yelled as soon as they entered the cabin, James right behind him.

Tom rolled his eyes and followed Harry to select their room.

Danny and Dougie got the smallest room, but they didn’t care, they were together, and that is what mattered. They left their bags at the end of their bed and wandered down the hall to see the other rooms.

Tom and Harry had the room next to them, a little bit bigger, still the one large bed in the middle of the room like theirs, but it was a little more spacious compared to theirs.

Across the hall from their two rooms was the bathroom, which was really nice. It had a huge bath and large shower. Danny could see himself and Dougie having a nice relaxing bath together during their stay.

Matt and James had by far the biggest room. They had a large bed and their window overlooked the sea. They had a large wardrobe for their clothes and had a balcony as well.

“This is paradise,” Matt said with a grin. He pulled James into his arms and they shared a kiss.

“Harry and I are going to wander the grounds for a while, we’ll be back after,” Tom said catching their attention.

Danny nodded at his two friends and they left the room. “What did you want to do, Dougs?” he asked.

“That beach looks pretty inviting,” Dougie grinned. “Race you?”

Danny smiled back, and they both grabbed their towels and raced each other down to the shore. They stripped themselves down to their board shorts and jumped in the cold water.

Dougie’s laughter rang in Danny’s ear as he jumped on him from behind and told Danny to “Giddy up, cowboy!”

Danny gripped onto Dougie’s legs tightly and spun around on the spot, causing them both to fall into the water together.

Danny laughed as he watched Dougie do some silly little half twirl and collapse in his arms. He stood his boyfriend up straight and kissed him gently on the lips. Dougie grinned and pushed Danny backwards, causing him to fall back in the water again.

Danny spluttered as he came up for water and he saw his lover’s grinning face. He advanced on Dougie and tackled him so they were wrestling against each other under the water. A few long moments later, they both came up for air and leant heavily against each other.

Out the corner of his eye, Danny saw Tom waving to them. He smiled and waved back, not expecting Dougie to tackle him when he was distracted. Danny laughed heartily as they surfaced again and he wrapped his arms around Dougie’s waist.

“I think Tom wants us to come back to shore,” Danny said breathlessly.

“Don’t want to,” Dougie shook his head, arms linking around Danny’s neck in a firm hold.

“C’mon, brat,” Danny grinned affectionately and kissed Dougie lightly.

He half carried, half dragged Dougie to shore and deposited him on their spread out towels. Dougie, who still had a tight hold of Danny, pulled him with him and they both landed in a heap on Dougie’s towel, soaking it through.

“You’re all wet,” Dougie giggled, brushing Danny’s hair out of his eyes. Dougie’s lips closed over his again and Danny could taste the sea water clearly on his lover’s lips.

They parted after a moment, Danny still situated in between Dougie’s legs. They looked up at Tom who was smiling at them like they were children.

“Hey Tom, how are ya?” Danny asked with a grin.

Tom knelt carefully on the sand. “Good,” he replied. “Just thought I’d let you know that dinner will be ready soon.”

“Dinner? Already?” Danny asked. “It’s only three.”

“Actually, Danny, it’s almost six, you and Dougie have been out here for hours,” Tom corrected, showing Danny his watch that said it was quarter to six.

“We’ll be up in a few,” Dougie said.

Tom nodded and stood, leaving them alone on the beach. Danny flopped back on his own towel and closed his eyes. He felt Dougie curl up next to him and kiss his bare chest. He cracked open an eye and ran a hand through Dougie’s wet hair.

“C’mon, we’d better go if we want a shower before dinner,” Danny said a while later.

Dougie groaned. “But being here is so much nicer,” he replied.

“I know, I could fall asleep here,” Danny said.

He stood anyway and held a hand out for Dougie to take. The blond took it and they gathered their clothes before making their way back up to the cabin. They dumped all of their wet clothes in the laundry sink and made their way to the bathroom for a shower.

Danny turned the tap on and pulled out two fresh towels for them to use. He followed Dougie into the shower. They immediately let out a sigh as soon as the warm water touched their cold skin. They cleaned themselves and washed their hair thoroughly before turning the tap off.

Stepping out of the stall, Danny handed Dougie a towel and wrapped the other around his waist. The pair dried off and made their way to their room to re-dress for the evening.

Tom was just about to call to them that dinner was ready when they entered the small dining area. They seated themselves next to each other as Harry dished up their dinner.

Danny never realised just how good a cook Harry was, but as he ate the shepherds pie, he appreciated that he was ignorant before.

After dinner, it was getting dark and Matt and James rearranged the living room in a lopsided circle so they could have a two seater couch each and still face each other.

Danny curled up with Dougie on one, and James turned on the stereo to provide some background music.

“This has been a great day,” Danny said with a smile.

Harry handed out beers to all of them and sat down next to Tom, putting an arm around him. They drank their beers laughing over things they had done since knowing each other.

A few hours later, Danny brought out his guitar and he and Tom sang a couple of songs together quite drunkenly.

“Tom and I wrote this next one the other week,” Danny said as he repositioned the guitar in his lap. “Forgive me if I stumble over the chords, I’ve not played it much.”

He launched into the song he and Tom had written together called The Heart Never Lies. Tom’s voice carried across the room and they hit every note perfectly despite being slightly drunk and Danny finished the song with a smile.

Dougie grinned at him and kissed him hotly. Danny pulled back and looked into his Dougie’s eyes which were shining with love. He placed a soft kiss the pink lips and whispered that he loved Dougie more than anything.

“I think we might go to bed,” Dougie said loud enough for the others to hear.

Matt winked at them and turned back to James, carrying on their conversation. Harry and Tom were holding hands and kissing lovingly. Danny knew that he had a good group of friends.

The next day, Harry, Danny and Matt decided to go explore a little around the cabin grounds and they soon found themselves sitting in a small pub not to far from their cabin.

“Thanks for this weekend, guys,” Danny said downing the end of his second beer. “It’s been really good.”

“Danny, it’s only Saturday, we still have a day left to go,” Harry said with a smirk. “I think you’ve drank too much already.”

Harry reached across the table and moved the third bottle away from Danny’s grasp. Danny shot him a look to which Harry promptly ignored. Years of friendship let them know the insides and outsides of each other and they knew when they were doing the right thing for each other.

“James and I were planning to spend a year abroad,” Matt said out of the blue.

“What?” Danny and Harry said in unison.

Matt nodded. “We’ve been talking, and we want to travel,” he continued. “He wants to keep studying, but we want to travel together too.”

“Wow,” Danny said.

“How long have you been planning this?” Harry asked.

“About six months,” Matt replied picking up his bottle to take a sip from. “We wanted to tell you guys, but there was never the right time to do so.”

Danny stayed silent. He knew that his friends were changing and there was nothing he could do about it, but they had been a group of six for as long as he could remember it. He wanted Matt to know he supported him, but he found it hard to say the words.

“Bring me back something nice,” Danny said with a cheeky grin.

Matt swatted him on the arm playfully. “Will do, Jones,” he grinned.

“I can’t believe you’re going though,” Danny said softly after a few long moments.

“Dan, it’s not forever, we’ll be back,” Matt said patting Danny’s hand comfortingly. “Besides, it’s not like we’re going to miss you and Dougie getting married.”

Danny’s head shot up. “What?”

Matt grinned at him. “C’mon, I’m not stupid,” he said. “I know you’ve been thinking about asking him.”

Danny spluttered for a minute. “Yeah, you’re right,” he smiled softly.

“And you,” Matt turned to Harry. “When are you going to ask Tom?”

“Me? What?” Harry gaped.

“Ask Tom to marry you,” Matt said slowly. “He’s been waiting for you to ask him since you moved in together.”

“What?” Harry repeated. “He hasn’t said anything to me.”

“Harry, don’t be blind. Tom has been patiently waiting for you to ask for ages now,” Matt said.

Danny nodded. “It’s true, when I got Dougie’s ring, he said he wanted to marry you but he wanted you to propose.”

“Why I am I the last to know these things?” Harry grumbled.

Danny chuckled and Matt threw a wadded up napkin at his head.

“I never knew he wanted to get married!”

“Of course he does, Harry, just because you’re gay, doesn’t put him off the idea of marriage,” Matt explained.

“When did you get so wise?” Harry asked, throwing the napkin back at him.

Matt grinned. “I have many hidden talents,” he winked at Harry who rolled his eyes.

“I’m sure James appreciates them all,” Harry muttered taking a swig of his drink.

“Oh, he does,” Matt grinned broadly, finishing the rest of his drink. “We’d better get back before the wives all worry.”

Danny chuckled and followed his two friends out of the pub and back to their cabin. He found Dougie sitting on the balcony, sketch book in hand.

“Hey,” Danny said with a smile.

Dougie looked up. “Hi,” he smiled back.

“That looks fantastic,” Danny said peering over Dougie’s shoulder before sitting down in the free chair.

Closing his sketch book, Dougie turned to face Danny. “It’s rough, nothing to look at.”

“May I?” Danny asked.

Dougie nodded and handed Danny the sketch book like he was handing over his heart, for Danny to either cherish or break. Danny set the book gently on his lap and opened it up to the first page.

Dougie’s drawings had always amazed him and now was no exception. The pages were filled with gorgeously detailed drawings of everything. There were ones of Danny, of the six of them, of Jazzie, Jazzie and Sam, Madeline, Natalie and Riley. There was even a detailed drawing of Danny and Dougie having sex. Danny flushed a little and caught Dougie’s eye.

Dougie smiled and took the book from him. “The real thing is much better than the sketch,” he said softly.

Danny held out his hand for Dougie to take and pulled him into his lap, arms encircling the small waist. Dougie settled against his chest, his head resting on Danny’s shoulder and he linked fingers with Danny.

They stayed silent, watching the sun set over the beach, watching the natural beauty before them. Danny relished the relaxed state he and his lover were in and he wished it would never end.

Dougie turned in Danny’s arms and kissed him briefly. “I love you,” he breathed.

“I love you too,” Danny whispered, staring into Dougie’s gorgeous eyes. “C’mon, let’s get some dinner.”

Dougie nodded and the pair stood, making their way inside. Tom had ordered pizza for dinner and Danny grinned, sitting next to Dougie and picking up an extra cheesy slice.

They laughed and carried on like they always did and once they had finished, the empty cardboard boxes went in the bin. That was always a perk of eating take out – no dishes to do.

“Matt and I want to tell you something,” James announced a short while after.

Danny looked at his friend with rapt attention.

“I know Matt spoke with Harry and Danny about this earlier, but we wanted you to know that we’re spending a year abroad when the new term starts,” James said with a smile.

Danny smiled and looked around at the faces of his other friends. Harry was also smiling, and Dougie had a grin on his face. Tom, however looked like he would cry.

“You’re leaving?” he asked quietly.

“Not forever, we’re just travelling for a year,” James said, still smiling.

“But you’re leaving,” Tom said, sounding hurt.

James got up from his position next to Matt and sat next to Tom. “For a little while. It’s not forever; we’re coming back after the year.”

Tom muttered something only James could hear and the boy genius wrapped his arms around Tom’s slender form in a tight hug. They continued conversing in hushed tones and Matt caught Danny’s eyes, signalling for a beer.

Danny stood and went to the kitchen to get the round of beers, pressing one carefully into Tom’s hand as he sat back down. He watched as Tom cradled the beer to his chest like it was going to stop James from leaving him.

“C’mon Tom,” James said loudly. “Let’s go for a walk.”

Tom hesitated for a second before taking James’ offered hand. He stood and followed James out of the cabin.

“I knew he would take this badly,” Harry said with a groan.

“Best not propose to him yet, he might have a breakdown if James isn’t here to share the news with,” Matt said throwing his bottle cap in Harry’s direction. Harry caught it in mid air and threw it back at Matt.

“Wait, you’re proposing to Tom?” Dougie asked.

Harry nodded and lay back on the couch. “Apparently so,” he said.

“Wait a minute, huh?” Dougie said.

Matt grinned. “Well, Harry here is going to propose to Tom, but he only found out today that he was supposed to do it about six months ago.”

“Shut up, Matt,” Harry groaned. “I didn’t know that’s what Tom wanted.”

“Some boyfriend you are,” Matt said.

“Why haven’t you proposed to James then, if you’re so smart on this whole topic?” Harry asked sharply.

Matt grinned. “Who says I haven’t?”

All three heads snapped to face Matt. “What?” they all spluttered.

Matt grinned broadly. “We’ve talked about it,” he said with a shrug.

“And?” Harry demanded.

“And what?” Matt said, clearly milking it as much as he could.

“What did he say?” Harry said, getting edgy.

“We decided that we’re going to take the year to travel and if we’re still as passionate about each other after the year is over then we’ll get married,” Matt replied.

“You complete sod,” Harry threw himself at Matt and hugged him tight. “I can’t believe you never told us.”

“There’s nothing to tell really, we decided it ourselves a while back,” Matt replied.

“But still, you’ve talked about it and everything, that’s more than we’ve done,” Harry said tucking his legs underneath him on the seat.

Matt shrugged again. “Well it’s not like we’re getting married or anything, so we decided to keep it to ourselves.”

“Man, that is wow,” Danny said.

Matt grinned. “We don’t just have sex all the time, Dan,” he said. “We talk about things like any couple does.”

A while later, Tom and James came back and Harry immediately got up to see how his lover was. Tom nodded and said he was fine and kissed Harry softly.

“We’re going to bed,” Harry said turning to the rest of them. “See you in the morning.”

With that, Harry took Tom’s hand and they walked off to their room.

“Danny,” Dougie whispered. “Do you ever think of marriage?”

Danny gulped. He didn’t know what to say. He couldn’t tell Dougie that he had the ring picked out and engraved and that he was waiting for the right moment to propose.

“Uh, sure, a couple of times,” he admitted.

Dougie shifted to face him. “Really?”

Danny nodded. “Have you?” he asked.

Dougie flushed. “A couple of times,” he said with a smile. “I’d love to marry you.”

Danny beamed. “I’d love to marry you too,” he said closing his lips over Dougie’s. “But when it’s right.”

Dougie nodded. “When it’s right,” he repeated softly. “I hope it’s soon,” he barely whispered into their kiss.

Danny heard and he smiled inwardly. He couldn’t wait to propose to Dougie now.
